I went out to catch a sunset, turned around and spotted a far better shot of the moon, perfectly framed through our Cottonwood tree!This photo was taken with Shutter Priority and flash, there has been no enhancement to the colouring, as a few have asked. It was looking into the east away from the sunset, which was also magnificent and that maybe why the blue is so intense?

You have discovered one of the most important things in taking pictures of a sunset - always look in the other direction too. You may find something worthwhile.
I've always heard it said about outdoor shots that if you like the light you're seeing, turn around and look behind you. Chances are good that you'll like that even better.
This shot is a perfect example of how that came to be "conventional wisdom".
The intensity of the blue is just a consequence of what colors were being reflected back in the scene. Which can be affected by a great many things. The meter in the camera is going to try to balance everything in the scene to 18% reflectivity, which is the average for most scenes. And apparently that big bright light in the middle of the frame told it you needed more blue to make the math work out right.
Or something.
I usually don't question the "how" too much when it turns out like this.
You're right it is a very special sight! It reminds me of a St.Nicolas song which is rather popular and sung on 5th December, which is our St.Nicolas'Eve. The song is as follows : See the moon looks through the trees....( too difficult to translate...)Great shots.

This is such a beautiful photo and would make an amazing book cover if it was in portrait style. Have you thought about selling your photos to dreamstime.com? that is where I buy my 'working' book covers from, I use them while I write the book as inspiration.
Blue colours are realy excellent. I agree, this must have been better choice than sunset as these are so good.
